Diwali Indian Festival

Diwali the Indian festival of lights!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Usually lasting five days and celebrated during the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika. This is one of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

In the lead-up to Diwali, celebrants prepare by cleaning, renovating, and decorating their homes and workplaces with oil lamps or candles and rangoli.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Snacks are a fundamental part of the Diwali menu and many of them come in the form of chivda, a spiced Bombay mix that consists of a variety of dried ingredients, such as peanuts, chickpeas, fried onion, and fried lentils.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

While many people refrain from eating meat during the holiday, vegetarian dishes are enjoyed. However, sweets are one of the most well-known elements associated.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Here is a breakdown of some of the most popular treats eaten during Diwali:

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Ghatiya: Deep-fried chickpea flour noodles with spices.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Chevda: A deep-fried snack food consisting of potato sticks, raisins, peanuts, and spices.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gulab jabun: Milk-based round doughnut-like balls simmered in saffron syrup and served warm.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Shakarpara: All-purpose flour sweetened with sugar syrup and ghee or oil with sesame seeds, then deep-fried and cut.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Ghugharas: Gujarati pastry dumplings stuffed with sweetened semolina, nuts, and spices, then deep-fried.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Matiya: Deep-fried Gujarati crispy bread made from moong dal.
